ABOUT

The Performing Louisville website seeks to be a space where Louisville artists can come together, learn about one another, and find community. The Performing Louisville website also seeks to provide Louisville artists with a platform and help educate our city and beyond about the arts community within Louisville.

Hi! I'm Caroline Frederick, the creator of the Performing Louisville website. I choose to create the website because I was inspired by a class I took this semester. I am currently a student at Trinity College in Hartford, CT and I took a class called "Performing Hartford," where we were visited by local artists and learned about their stories. We learned about their connection to the Hartford area, how they survive as a local artist, and what being an artist means to them. I was inspired by their stories and wanted to create a website where I could give a platform to the local artists that I admire in my hometown. This website is meant to be a safe, collaborative, and enjoyable space for artist and community members to come together and learn from one another.

Throughout our class this semester, we have talked about this idea of "turning our heads", that we read about in Deborah Goffe's thesis "Orienting Ourselves to See: Mapping Nested Dance Ecosystems as Curatorial Practice." This idea of "turning our heads" is about being able to see what is beyond our immediate sight. To begin to pay attention to, observe, and participate in the local arts community all around you. That is the goal of the website. To help people in my hometown of Louisville to turn their heads to all the incredible art happening around them. Growing up at the Louisville Ballet and my grandmother exposing me to the music community early on in my life, I have been able to see the incredible art scene in this city. I have seen Breonna Taylor murals, street art, street dance, live music, art shows, dance groups, and more in every single corner of this city. Although Louisville seems far away from any artistic "hub", we have an artistic hub of our own. We just have to turn our heads.
